Visual Arts in Worship

What role do the Visual Arts play in a Worship service?
Does placing an artist on the platform to 'paint as they are moved during worship' a valid way to include the visual arts?
What about painting random lines and shapes, then when it's turned upside down Jesus' face appears?
What about displaying finished works of art, whether they are banners, paintings or quilts in the sanctuary?
I am currently reading a book called For the Beauty of the Church, which is a collection of essays by various authors on different aspects of art in the Church. One essay written by John D. Witvliet, asks whether art displayed for worship should be created in a community, a collaboration?
Where and How do the Visual Arts fit?
